Can you tell us a little about yourself?
By : CuriousRigger81 (Fetlife)
I am Erik – I work as a parachute rigger, and have turned from there into adding on being a rope artist. I identify as a rigger – I’ve not explored my submissive side… if I even have one! I think it’s best to take these things one part at a time.
When did you first encounter rope?
Good question! Let me think – I was curious about kink in general and went to a munch where I met some lovely people. As time went on I attended one or two events, but these were kink-related, not rope. So the rope part came when I began dating my partner who was very much into the rope scene and enjoyed tying. I started out by going to some workshops, attending guided tying sessions and then began going deeper than that.
This was all before the pandemic, where there was the inevitable gap. So it feels like it is only now that I am more into rope. I guess there is also a factor to be aware of which is that in my home country people are more reserved and conservative so I’ve also felt like being quite cautious.
So the origin story is that my partner enjoyed being tied and it turns out that I enjoyed tying them and was actually quite good at it!
I’ve also been very familiar with rope through my work. The work I do is very practical and I use my hands a lot. I enjoy building and making things. So this transfers to shibari – not just the technical side (I mean, if you are restraining someone you don’t want the knots to undo!) and then there is also the playful and artistic side – how to enjoy your partner, their body and psyche and create wonderful experiences together.
What’s your favourite/funniest/best memory of tying or being tied?
Oh! My most memorable experience with ropes was actually the last time I was here at RopeSpaceCph: my model was feeling particularly responsive to my ropes and how I was using them. It felt incredibly special and sticks in my mind.
I would also say – when I met HenRigger and Rose in Cape Town at Embodiment Rope Space: they are two people who are open, encouraging, experienced, good at their art and clearly really enjoy what they do. It was really refreshing to experience.
What is something you’d tell people just getting started, or who are curious about rope?
Get started! Just like anything else – dip your toe in the water and see how it goes. Move slowly. Explore. Find places like RopeSpace that are filled with equally respectful and encouraging people. Ensure your boundaries are respected. Just like anything in life, there is no need to jump in at the deep end.
Most people will want you to have a positive experience, especially as you are starting to explore. Maybe I would also say, if you are completely new, then find a space like RopeSpace that also has known and trusted mentors. Even if you are not directly part of their tie, be sure they can keep a supervised eye on you.
Would you like to tell us about any hopes, dreams or goals you have for your rope life? Anything you are really looking forward to?
I mostly want to improve. One day I could perhaps even teach others – though on the other hand I don’t want to turn a joy into a commitment (like I have with my job!). I wish to carry on learning, teaching, sharing, and above all – keeping it fun.
